Showcase: Fighting fire

The initial request for a large air charter often lies back many months before the flight takes place, often at a time when the product is still in planning stages.

The transportation of three fire fighting trucks for a project in Sakhalin was one of these requests. The fire fighting trucks weighing 16 tons each and measuring 926 x 250 x 333 cm were part of a Panalpina Panprojects transport.

The Russian Antonov 124 would have been the ideal aircraft for the job, but landing this huge aircaft in Sakhalin, the final destination in Russia, was out of the question. A more creative solution had to be found, assuring the on-time arrival of these trucks. Without these trucks, the plant would not be able to open. Safety first!

Extensive communication and various pre-shipping meetings with all parties resulted into a flight from Amsterdam to Pusan, a straight forward job, where the trucks were driven into the aircraft and strapped properly to avoid any movement.

But we were not there yet! Ferrying the fire fighting trucks from Pusan to Sakhalin on an Ilyushin 76 aircraft would have been ideal, but even by decreasing the tire pressure, the trucks would just not fit into the aircraft. So, early during the communications this plan was rejected.

The trucks were brought to Pusan's Port Terminal instead, just in time to catch the next vessel to Sakhalin. From there the job was back in the capable hands of Panalpina's Panprojects team.

Another job was successfully concluded, involving two of Panalpina's specialist units as well as oru colleagues in the origin and destination stations.
